Ndakala (also widely spelled as ndagala or dagaa) refers to the small, silvery, sardine-like freshwater fish native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Belonging primarily to two species—Limnothrissa miodon and Stolothrissa tanganicae—these tiny fish are a vital economic and dietary staple across Central and East Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, Zambia, and Tanzania.
Because they are highly perishable, they are traditionally sun-dried immediately after being caught. This gives them a long shelf life and yields an intensely aromatic, savory marine flavor. They are a powerhouse of protein, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
